Guwahati, Feb 1: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has criticized Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement about a new unit at the Namrup Fertilizer Plant, calling it insincere due to the lack of budgetary allocation.
In a press statement on Saturday, AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi and General Secretary Jagadish Bhuyan questioned Sitharaman’s claim. “The Finance Minister announced a 12.7 lakh metric tonne urea unit but didn’t clarify if it refers to the long-delayed fourth unit or a new project. More importantly, no funds have been allocated, raising doubts about the announcement,” they said.
This is the fourth such promise by the Centre without any progress, the leaders noted, recalling similar assurances by Suresh Prabhu in 2017 and later by Union Fertilizer Ministers Sadananda Gowda and Mansukh Mandaviya.
The AJP slammed the Union Budget 2025, calling it “unoriginal and disconnected from economic realities.” They accused the Centre of favouring Bihar for electoral gains while neglecting Assam’s needs.
“The budget strengthens the Public-Private Partnership model to benefit corporate giants while privatizing public assets,” they alleged, adding that the absence of any mention of the Northeast was “deeply disappointing.”
The party urged Assam’s citizens to demand action instead of hollow announcements from the government.
