Shillong, April 2: BJP leader and cabinet minister AL Hek on Wednesday lent his support for the ‘one nation, one election’ policy, calling it the best policy.

According to him, the proposal of simultaneous conduct of elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies will to a great extent minimize the expenditure aspects of it.

“One nation, one election is the best policy. That is my personal observation,” Hek told reporters.

“Today, we have so many elections in a year. In every election they will introduce the model code of conduct. If the model code of conduct is in place, it will hamper so many developments. So many elections lead to so many days of model code of conduct and so much expenditure will be involved. Who will be the ultimate loser, it is the citizens and people of the country,” he explained.

Asked, Hek said, “I have no problem winning or losing election but my concern is only for the development of the state and how to minimize unnecessary expenditure of the country and state of Meghalaya.”

On the query about BJP’s plans to contest the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) polls expected to be held next year, he did not clearly specify if the party will contest but remarked, “What for we are a political party if we are not contesting the elections.”

At the same time, he underscored that BJP is the only party that works all the time, irrespective of the elections. “BJP is working throughout whether there is election or no election or any party or party work… BJP is working 24X7 for the people,” he said.
