TURA, Oct 12: Alcoholics and addicts in Rugapara village of South Garo Hills have been forced to spend their first night in an absolute “dry” state after the women from the village raided their illegal liquor den and destroyed dozens of bottled whiskey on Wednesday.
The raid was necessitated to stem the rising cases of addiction as even school going children began to fall prey to the easy availability of liquor.
Women from Rugapara Cluster Level Federation along with dozens of school students marched to the site of the illegal den and confiscated crates of Indian Made foreign Liquor (IMFL) that was kept for sale in the village by the dealer.
They opened up all the bottles and emptied their contents onto the ground, much to the nightmare of the boozers, who have spent their first day and night without a drop to drink.
“There are no checks conducted by the departments even though complaints have long been made and this has further encouraged its sale. We are getting instances where children as young as 12-15 years of age have been found procuring liquor and addiction is rising. That is why we decided to take it upon ourselves to end this social evil,” said the women from the cluster federation.
