Tura, Sep 29: All Garo Hills Anganwadi Workers’ and Helpers Association recently met Agatha K Sangma, Member of Parliament 2 , Tura Parliamentary Constituency to apprise her and intervene the prolonged demands of the Association.
The association discussed their long-standing demands with Agatha K. Sangma, seeking her intervention in addressing the issues.
The association expressed their hope that her support would help resolve the concerns faced by the Garo Hills Anganwadi Workers’ and Helpers Association.
The prolonged demands include:
1. Enhancement of honorarium: It is a matter of depression that the Anganwadi workers are paid poorly despite their heavy duties. The costs of essential commodities have rocketed today, which the Anganwadi workers cannot afford with a meagre honorarium of RS 7500/- (4500 from the Central Govt. + Rs 3000 from the State Govt.). So, we demand that the honorarium be increased by at least Rs 20, 000.
2. Quality Smartphone : The smartphone issued to the A/W workers by the Government is in a dilapidated condition due to its low quality & long existence which is of no use at this juncture. So. we demand that the new Smarthphone of good quality be issued to the A/W workers for the smooth functioning .
3. Reservation for the post of Lady Supervisor: It is a known fact to one and all that the Anganwadi workers are serving their best for society, notwithstanding the burden they have to pull daily. Educationally, many of the Anganwadi workers are highly qualified and experienced in their jobs. In view of this, we urged upgrading the senior and experienced Anganwadi workers to the post of lady supervisor with a new demand to reserve at least 50% of the new posts of lady supervisor for the regular senior Anganwadi workers, irrespective of graduation or educational qualifications.
4. Equivalent payment for polio duty and health programmes: The Anganwadi workers are given extra burden by loading health programmes like polio immunisation, a survey on TB, etc. The ASHA workers are paid Rs 100/- a day, and the Anganwadi workers are paid Rs 75/- a day for polio duty. So, we demand equal pay for equal work.
