Ampati, Nov 4: The 1st South West Garo Hills (SWGH) District Chess Championship 2023, which concluded on Saturday (November 4, 2023) at Ampati Degree College, has turned out to be a huge success. The first of its kind championship in the district was participated by 60 plus chess enthusiasts from all walks of life.

The two – day event was organized by the South West Garo Hills District Chess Association in collaboration with the District Sports Office.

The Championship followed the Swiss league system to count the points with the participants competing in 4 categories – General, Under-10, Under-15 and Veteran.

Mahendraganj MLA Sanjay A Sangma accompanied by Boldamgre MDC Stevie M Marak and other dignitaries distributed the trophies and certificates to the winners.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners in the General category were Charming R Marak securing 7 38.0 48.5 points, Ponkas Marak securing 6 38.0 48.5 37.0 points and Princestar R Marak 6 32.5 42.0 32.0.

In the under-10 category the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners were Baiyansrang K Sangma securing 5 32.5 42.0 37.0, Chingchaw Ch Marak securing 4 29.5 37.0 24.0 and Sengdo M Sangma securing 4 27.5 36.6 23.0.

Yunkeychean Marak securing 4.5 26.5 33.5 19.0, Chongkimbea M Sangma securing 4 33.0 41.5 26.0 and Salora T Sangma securing 4 28.5 36.5 23.0 were declared the 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the under-15 category.

Livingstone A Sangma securing 6 32.0 41.0 33.0 was adjudged the best veteran.
