GUWAHATI, May 16: In a flurry of high-impact decisions, the Assam Cabinet on Friday greenlit a slate of initiatives targeting agriculture, welfare, investment, and education. At the centre of the action: a mega-dairy plant by AMUL, subsidised food staples for low-income families, and long-overdue support for ICT instructors.
AMUL dairy plant to power rural livelihoods
In a major boost to Assam’s dairy sector, the Cabinet approved the lease of 20 bighas of land at the Institute of Farm Management Campus in Rani to AMUL.
Briefing the media on the cabinet decision, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said, “The Gujarat-based dairy giant will set up a processing plant with a capacity of 1 lakh litres per day, at an estimated cost of ₹75 crore—scaling up to ₹150 crore. The project, born out of an MoU signed during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, is expected to directly benefit nearly 20,000 dairy farmers and generate rural employment across the state.”
Subsidised foodgrains for NFSA beneficiaries
Starting October 1, the government will roll out subsidised masur dal, sugar, and salt to National Food Security Act (NFSA) beneficiaries. The scheme will first launch in select districts and expand statewide by November 2025.
“Consumers can purchase each item individually at the following subsidised prices -Masur Dal at ₹69/kg, sugar at ₹38/kg and salt at ₹10/kg. The move aims to make essential food items more affordable for Assam’s economically weaker sections,” Pegu said.
Rs 458 crore in industrial investments
To accelerate private sector growth, the Cabinet approved two major proposals under the Industrial and Investment Promotion Act, bringing in a total investment of ₹457.98 crore. The projects are projected to create roughly 1,000 new jobs, reinforcing Assam’s push to become a magnet for industry and investment.
Big win for ICT instructors
In a significant welfare measure, the Cabinet approved a raise in the monthly honorarium for 1,313 part-time ICT instructors under the Dr. Banikanta Kakati Computer Literacy Programme. Starting October 2025, the honorarium will rise to ₹20,000 per month.
Instructors will also benefit from:
Service continuity up to 60 years of age and eligibility for welfare schemes like Mukhya Mantri Lok Sevak Arogya Yojana, Apun Ghar, and Apun Bahan.
These steps mark a major leap toward job security and recognition for the instructors powering Assam’s digital education drive.
