Shillong, April 8: The state is slated to vote on April 19 for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. The polling is on cards in two constituencies in Meghalaya. The grassroot voters in Shillong expressed their concerns over the crucial social issues like development, education, healthcare, and the rising cost of living.

Speaking to Hubnews local street vendor, Sngikha Lyngkhoi, stressed on the urgency of addressing the issue of soaring price rise of essential goods. She stated that “our need is that the price of commodities must come down when we vote this time,” said the street vendor, emphasizing on the pivotal role the issue will have and influence the voting decisions.

Echoing similar concerns, local cab driver Lam Lyngkhoi highlighted the need for government assurance regarding support for families in case of accidents or unforeseen circumstances.

Besides economic worries, there is a prevailing sense of doubt towards the opposition.

While not directly naming any party, some residents hinted at the lack of trust in opposition parties, potentially swaying support towards the ruling party.

In discussions with voters, a strong desire for effective parliamentary representation emerges. Many expressed their fear about electing parties without strong foundations and stressed on the importance of having their voices heard through elected representatives.

On the ‘Jaidbynriew’ issue, voters’ express disillusionment, noting that such discussions often remain confined within closed doors and fail to translate into meaningful action.

Regarding the BJP’s alleged anti-Christian stance, voters in Meghalaya refute these claims, stating they haven’t observed any discriminatory acts by the party. This perception is significant in a region where concerns about religious freedom are pertinent.

As the polling date approaches, these sentiments highlight the priorities of Meghalayan voters: development, economic security, and effective representation in Parliament.
