Animal rights activists demand justice for brutal killing of stray dog in Gangtok

The dog was fatally shot on July 19, 2024 at Kazi Road. The tragic incident has sparked outrage among animal welfare advocates in the State.

The protest was led by members of ‘People For Animals’ and ‘The Guardians, Sikkim’, two organizations dedicated to protecting animal rights in the state. These groups have been actively seeking justice for the stray dog, having filed an FIR with the Sadar Police Station. However, despite their efforts, no arrests have been made, with the Sikkim Police citing insufficient evidence as the reason for the lack of action.

Karma Youtso, the founder of The Guardians, Sikkim, expressed deep concern over the situation, stating, “The individual responsible for this cruel act remains at large. It’s widely known who committed the crime, yet they have not been brought to justice. The case seems to have been prematurely closed, but we refuse to let it fade away. Animals may not have a voice, but we are here to speak on their behalf.”

The protesters also took the opportunity to educate the public on the issue of animal cruelty, handing out pamphlets to raise awareness about the importance of protecting animals.
