Apollo Shillong to introduce 5G-Connected ambulance for swift emergency response

Must read

Shillong, April 11: In a first for the city, Apollo Trinity Medical Center in Shillong is set to roll out a 5G-connected ambulance service, offering real-time emergency care and remote monitoring of patients even before they reach the hospital.

Speaking to our reporters, Debapriya Deb the CEO of Apollo Trinity Medical Center in Shillong, said, “We are displaying this new initiative, and our endeavor is to have one 5G-connected ambulance stationed at our center in Shillong soon. This will help in transporting patients to various hospitals, especially in cases that require advanced surgery or critical care. The patients can also be remotely monitored during transit.”

He added that the facility would be accessible to anyone in the city, not just Apollo patients via a dedicated four-digit helpline number. “Anybody can avail this service by dialing that number. However, it will be a paid service, as we are setting up a full-fledged emergency unit,” Deb clarified.

Vishal Agarwal the Marketing Head of Apollo Multispecialty Hospitals Guwahati, elaborated on the technology behind the ambulance, which has already been launched in cities like Kolkata and Guwahati.

“This 5G ambulance is designed to begin treatment from the moment the patient enters the vehicle. It’s equipped with multiple cameras and systems that are connected in real time to our emergency department,” he said.

“The doctors in the hospital can see the patient live via a secure feed, communicate directly with the medical team in the ambulance, and instruct them to begin administering medication or other emergency support,” Agarwal explained. “This is treatment on the move; it’s like a mobile emergency room.”

He added that the technology is already showing promising results in other cities. “There’s only a few seconds’ delay in the live feed, so it’s almost real-time. As IT and 5G network coverage expands, this facility will reach even more areas,” Agarwal said.

The high-speed, low-latency 5G network relays the geo-location of the ambulance to the hospital’s command centre to ensure the nearest ambulance reaches the critical patient to save the Golden Hour time. Also, the ambulance transmits the patient’s complete telemetry data, including vitals, in near real-time to doctors and experts at the hospital. This allows the doctors at ER to make quicker decisions and advise paramedics in the ambulance to administer required aid while on the move. It also prepares the hospital staff to better manage the patient on arrival and save precious time, added Agarwal.
