Tawang (Arunachal), Aug 23: Due to a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) from lake Sangnga Nehgu, over five log bridges and the Brokpa track was damaged in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district.
The GLOF occurred on August 14 and this was confirmed by a team from the District Disaster Management Authority led by Tawang Deputy Commissioner, Kanki Darang, and Superintendent of Police, DW Thongon, which trekked to the lake.
The team also comprised of Extra Assistant Commissioner of Mogto, Honjon Perme, Assistant Engineer WRD, Jang Kago Kani, District Information and Public Relation Officer Tawang, trek leader and photography expert, Jambey Dondu, representatives from the Indian army, National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports and other supporting staffs.
The trek to the lake, located at a height of 16000 ft above the sea level on the Gorichen mountain range, was taken based on the direction of the National Disaster Management Authority. There are three such sensitive glacial lakes in Tawang district.
The team started their trek from Jethang (13200ft) on August 20 and halted at Merathang (14600ft). Next day, early in the morning the team started to climb up and reached the lake at 16000ft.
The team found that on August 14, there was GLOF from Sangnga Nehgu, which caused the damages downstream. It was further observed that there is a danger of further GLOF from the same lake.
The team found the glacier behind the lake is melting at a rapid rate and increasing the volume of water in the lake, raising fear that this may cause another outburst.
