Itanagar, March 23: Arunachal Pradesh police arrested drug kingpin Rohit Basumatary at Holongi Road near Itanagar on Saturday while he was transporting narcotics to the capital.
Basumatary, a notorious drug trafficker from Assam, was shot in the legs during the operation and later apprehended. Two police personnel were injured in the encounter.
According to the police, Basumatary, who was wanted in multiple drug-related cases in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, was intercepted near Sogo Resort following a tip-off.
“We had prior information about a vehicle transporting narcotics to the capital through Rohit Basumatary. When our team identified the vehicle as suspicious and attempted to intercept it, the accused broke through the barricades and crashed into an electric pole. As the team moved to apprehend him, he fired two rounds at the SDPO’s vehicle before fleeing into a jungle,” an officer said.
He added, “While our officers chased him, Basumatary fired at Sub-Inspector Tamu Bagang. In retaliation, our officers returned fire, hitting Basumatary in the legs before taking him into custody.”
The injured smuggler was immediately taken to RK Mission Hospital for treatment under police custody before his formal arrest. Further investigation is underway.
“For the last 10 days, we have been tracking drug-related activities, and finally, we have nabbed the drug kingpin. We had warned him not to bring drugs into Arunachal Pradesh,” said a senior police officer.
