Guwahati, June 7: In a noble initiative towards enhancing fisheries management and preserving riverine ecology, approximately 600 Indian Major Carps were released into the Subansiri River on June 6. This initiative marks the beginning of a comprehensive Fisheries Management Plan at the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project (SLP) in Assam.
The Department of Fisheries, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and NHPC Ltd formalized the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the Fisheries Management Plan.
The MoA was signed by Joyshil Taba, Director of Fisheries and Manmeet Singh Chowdhary, General Manager (Environment), NHPC Ltd., in the presence of Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director, SLP, NHPC Ltd.
The plan envisages the development of hatcheries for the rearing the fish seeds of Golden Mahseer, Snow Trout and Indian Major and Minor Carps by the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh and the ranching of fingerlings in Subansiri River upstream of SLP-Dam as a conservation measure for the sustenance of riverine ecology.
To mark the commencement of the activity, ranching of about 6000 fingerlings of Indian Major Carps was undertaken by the officers of SLP, NHPC Ltd. and Fisheries Department Govt of Arunachal Pradesh in the Subansiri River downstream of the dam.
It is noteworthy that Fisheries management activities are necessary downstream of big dams to address the various impacts that dams can have on the aquatic ecosystem. Dams often disrupt the natural flow of rivers, which negatively affects the natural habitat for migratory fish species, water quality, and the overall ecological balance.
