Arunachal Pradesh: Residents facing hardships due to closure of Hayuliang-Chaglagham road

Must read

Itanagar, May 5: Residents of Chaglagham in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district are grappling with severe difficulties following the closure of the Hayuliang-Chaglagham road since April 22, 2025. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) had shut the route after heavy rains rendered it unsafe, aiming to prevent any untoward incidents.

Located on the left bank of the Dalai River at an altitude of 1,258 meters above sea level, Chaglagham is one of the most remote yet progressive administrative circles in the state. The Hayuliang-Chaglagham road is the area’s primary link to the rest of the district and beyond, serving not only civilians but also security forces, including the Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), deployed near the Indo-China border.

Despite advancements in road-building technologies resulting in some all-weather roads, many critical routes in Arunachal Pradesh continue to suffer from chronic neglect. The Hayuliang-Chaglagham stretch is one such example, plagued by years of poor maintenance, alleged substandard construction, and corruption. As a result, sections of the road are routinely washed away during the monsoon season, cutting off access for both local residents and security personnel.

“We are facing immense problems due to the road closure. It’s been shut since April 22, and even now it remains inaccessible,” said Awailang Amalum, a local resident of Chaglagham. “We are running short of essential commodities and medicines. The road is not only vital for civilians but also for security forces stationed here. We urge the BRO and the government to restore connectivity at the earliest.”

Given Chaglagham’s strategic importance, the prolonged closure has raised concerns about both humanitarian and national security impacts. Locals and officials alike are calling for urgent intervention to reopen and reinforce this lifeline of the region.
