Itanagar, Dec 3: Arunachal Pradesh is poised to become India’s hydropower powerhouse, with Chief Minister Pema Khandu revealing ambitious plans to harness the state’s massive energy potential. Addressing an official gathering, Khandu emphasized that Arunachal holds 50% of India’s total hydropower capacity, positioning it as a key player in the nation’s renewable energy future.
With proposed projects capable of generating 35,000 MW, Khandu projected annual state revenues of Rs 10,000 crore over the next decade. The central government has also agreed to a 26% equity share for Arunachal in these projects, along with 12% free power, ensuring long-term economic gains.
Among the upcoming developments are five hydropower projects in the Shi-Yomi district, set to generate 2,626 MW and boost regional growth. MoUs have been signed with leading Central agencies like NHPC, NEEPCO, NTPC, and SJVN, ensuring expertise and efficiency in execution.
Highlighting the transformative Siang Multipurpose Project, Khandu described it as more than a power initiative—it’s a comprehensive strategy for flood control, water management, and energy generation.
With a projected capacity of over 13,500 MW and an estimated cost of Rs 1 trillion, this could become India’s largest hydroelectric venture, reshaping the energy landscape and securing Arunachal’s economic future.
