Tura, May 16: The A·chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) has backed the demand of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) for designating Jowai as the summer capital of Meghalaya. ASPF supported JSU’s demand during the 11th Winter Capital Meeting organized by the group at Chokchokia Playground in West Garo Hills on Friday.
The meeting was organized in collaboration with the Nokmas of the region, with participation from various NGOs of the Rajabala area, including the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), A·chik Progressive Approach (APA), and the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), as well as the Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP).

The primary objective of the meeting was to raise awareness regarding the significance of establishing a second capital in Tura and to highlight its associated benefits.
“The gathering aimed to foster unity within the Garo community to address this crucial issue, consistent with the commitments made by the founders of our state,” said Adv. Bernita Marak, the General Secretary of ASPF.
During the meeting, she said ASPF supports JSU’s demand for designating Jowai as the summer capital. She also urged government to shift present summer capital from Shillong to Jowai.
