Doomdooma, May 22: A wave of panic has gripped the Tongonagaon tea estate under the Doomdooma revenue circle in the Tinsukia district of Assam following the deaths of at least 11 individuals from cholera and diarrhoea in one week.

The deaths have raised serious concerns about the health crisis in the tea garden area. The diseases have taken an epidemic form, especially in the Kulibill line of the garden, as the highest fatalities are recorded from this locality.

According to reports, many others are undergoing treatment in the garden hospital. However, due to a lack of awareness, many infected persons are at home without undergoing any treatment.

The Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association (ATTSA), Tinsukia district committee, has submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner demanding immediate measures to provide adequate treatment to the patients lying ill at home or in hospital. The organisation has also demanded proper health services in all tea gardens and ex gratia to the kin of those who lost their lives. Organising medical camps in all the tea gardens of the district is also one of the demands of ATTSA.

ATTSA has provided the names of 11 persons who lost their lives in recent times. They are Sunu Tanti (69), Dibisanta Tanti (28), Sunil Tanti (43), Punu Tanti (68), Jimmy Garh (60), Sita Tanti (32), Loiya Tanti (50), Sachin Tanti (43), Sibrat Gowala (45), Dhanu Tanti (50) and Gorothi Urang (60).

Meanwhile, Labour and Tea Tribes Welfare Minister Sanjay Kishan visited the garden and assessed the situation. The minister informed reporters that the mobile medical unit team of the state health department had already reached the garden and started treatment.
