Guwahati, July 14: Silchar police arrested a person for driving his SUV in an inebriated state and injuring at least 15 people and vehicles in Assam’s Silchar on Saturday.

Police have also taken the SUV in their custody.

According to eyewitnesses, the SUV driven by the man hit three people near the municipal office. While trying to flee, the driver injured three more people at Capital Point and then struck some bikes and e-rickshaws at Trunk Road.

Many liquor bottles were recovered from the SUV. The SUV number plate has a registration of Mizoram.

As the rampage continued, people started following the SUV on their two-wheelers. The car stopped at the Tennis Club Point as it could not move ahead due to bad road.

“We heard a loud sound in front Tennis Club Point and came out immediately and saw that a Mahindra SUV car hit the gate of the Tennis Club Point. The incident happened due to the bad condition of the road. The car already hit many people. The car was in a high speed and many people jumped in drains to save their lives from the reckless driving. The car was registered under Mizoram number plate and many liquor bottles were recovered from the car,” said a local resident.
