Assam: 2 dead, 33 injured during eviction drive at Sonapur in Kamrup

Guwahati, Sept 13: Atleast 33 people sustained injured and 2 others lost their lives in an intense confrontation between state authorities and the alleged encroachers, who have illegally encroached government land at Sonapur in Assam’s Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, during an eviction drive on Thursday.

Two people died after Assam police opened fire at the violent mob, who tried to stop the officials from carrying out the eviction drive.

Prior to the firing, the government officials from the Sonapur circle office including on-duty police personnel were attacked by sharp weapons, sticks and stones when they went for eviction drive at Sonapur in Kamrup Metro.

The assault resulted in injuries to 22 government officials (as per records available till now), including a magistrate and over 10 police personnel. Additionally, a police vehicle was severely damaged in the fracas.

In the wake of violent attacks by miscreants, police also resorted to authorised use of force following due process. In this, 13 persons were injured of whom two have been declared dead at the hospital.

Revenue authorities of Kamrup Metro have been carrying out eviction drive at the government land in the notified tribal belt of Sonapur Revenue Circle of Kamrup Metro since September 9, 2024, following laid down processes.

During this process, 248 bighas of government land has been cleared of encroachment removing 237 illegally constructed structures in the tribal belt.

Meanwhile, Guwahati police have been directed to identify all the miscreants involved in the attack on government officials and take lawful action.

Taking to X (formerly twitter), Assam DGP GP Singh said, “Conspiracy behind the attack on government officials that has taken place on the fourth day of the eviction process would also be investigated by @GuwahatiPol All instigators and conspirators behind such attack would be brought to book in due course.”
