Guwahati, Aug 18: Yet again two people were brutally lynched in the early hours of Thursday in two separate incidents in Assam. Mob lynching has been increasing in the state in last few years.

The deceased has been identified as Mojibur Ali.

According to Darrang Superintendent of Police (SP), Prakash Sonowal, the incident took place in the district’s Sipajhar area at about 3 am on Thursday.

His family members told the police that Mojibur Ali was on his way home after attending to an emergency when he was attacked in Sipajhar.

According to police, the incident took place early in the morning around 3:15 am when Ali was allegedly trying to take the goats out from someone’s property when he was caught. He tried to flee but was caught by the mob. They thrashed him to death without even hearing anything from his side.

In another incident, 27-year-old Binod Brahma was killed on suspicion of stealing from a home in the village. The incident took place in Tinipukhuri in Assam’s Tamulpur district.

“He (Binod) allegedly entered a home with the intention of stealing. The family members of that household and neighbours gathered and assaulted him, as a result he died due to injuries,” said a police official.

Both killings come days after an incident in Hojai district where Hifzur Rahman was lynched on alleged suspicion of cattle theft on August 12.

Meanwhile, police on Thursday arrested eight people in connection with the killing.

In July 24, a man called Saddam Hussain was lynched in Morigaon district when a mob thrashed him and two others, allegedly suspecting them to be cattle smugglers. Police arrested five people in connection with the case.

Assam DGP G P Singh said “lawful action has been taken” in all such cases reported so far.
