Guwahati, July 19: Four policemen and over 20 local residents of the Silchar area sustained injuries after an angry mob attacked police during a protest with the dead body of a girl at Silchar in Assam Cachar district on Tuesday night.

Over a thousand people blocked road with dead body of a 19 year old girl, who was allegedly raped and murdered. Her mutilated dead body was found four days after she went missing.

Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta said, “At around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, people blocked Rangirkhari Point of Silchar town with the dead body. The police and CRPF were deployed to control the situation. At around 10:30 p.m., police attempted to take the body for cremation when an angry mob started pelting stones at them. Four policemen sustained injuries.”

“The family members of the victim were cooperative, and after handing over the dead body of the girl from Silchar Medical College, they were going for cremation, but suddenly a mob came from somewhere and staged a protest with the dead body of the girl blocking the road. Meanwhile, police and CRPF personnel were deployed, but suddenly some people pelted stones at the police. Police have later controlled the situation,” the SP said.

The 19 year old girl went missing on July 15 under mysterious circumstances and was found dead in an under construction building in the Dwarbond area, which is 30 kilometres away from Silchar.

Police said locals noticed the dead body and informed them.

The victim used to work at a shop. Her parents lodged an FIR at Rangirkhari Police Station when they couldn’t get in touch with her, and her mobile phone was found switched off.

“We are investigation the matter. But Right now we can’t say anything about the case,” said an police officer.
