Must read

Guwahati, Sept 6: Close on the heels of three madrassas having links to people arrested for terror charges demolished in Assam, the local people of Goalpara district on Tuesday demolished a private Darogar Alga Madrassa at Pakhiura Char (a riverrine island on the Brahmaputra river).

Government and police officials said it was a ‘voluntary demolition’ and no Government order was issued or government resources used.

The residence adjacent to madrassa, which was previously used by two suspected Bangladeshi nationals, decided to demolish the madrassa as a ‘strong resentment’ towards the Jihadi terror activities.

The arrested accused in Matia PS case No 105/22, Jalaluddin Sheikh, a local Imam and a madrassa official, was arrested last month and in in his interrogation had said that he had engaged Aminul Islam alias Usman alias Mehdy Hasan and Jahangir Alom, both absconding Bangladeshi AQIS cadres, as teachers of this Darogar Alga Pakhiura Char Madrassa at different times during 2020-22, police sources added.

Last saturday, Assam police and various muslim groups in Assam held a crucial meeting on the madrassas in Assam in the backdrop of recent demolition of three madrassas in the state by the government. The government claimed that all the demolished madrassas had links with people arrested with terror charges. Assam DGP held the crucial meeting with the Imams of several Muslim organizations of the state. The meeting is seen as a reach out effort by the government towards its plan to create a digital database of all private madrassas in the state.

The DGP had also suggested measures like introduction of general subjects in the Madrassa curriculum such as mathematics, computers, geography, history, etc. apart from the religious studies. He also sought their views on merger of small, unregistered Madrassas, who have no allegiance to any board, with bigger Madrassas.
