Assam: AASU protest in Dibrugarh over skyrocketing price

Must read

Dibrugarh, July 14: In view of the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities in the state, members of the Dibrugarh District unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a massive protest at Marwari Patty in Dibrugarh on Friday.

The students’ union demanded a curb in the rising prices of fuel, cylinder, medicines, electricity bill, foodgrains and other essential commodities.

The protesters also burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state civil supplies and consumer affairs minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

A minor scuffle also broke out between the police and the AASU members when they tried to prevent them from burning the effigies.

AASU leader Abani Gogoi said, “We demand the resignation of state civil supplies and consumer affairs minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass as he has totally failed to control price rise. He has proved to be the most incompetent minister of the present government. From fuel, cylinder, medicines, electricity bill, foodgrains to vegetables, price has gone beyond control and out of reach of common people. The government should take strong measures to curb price rise.”

“Due to rising price of essential commodities, the common people are facing difficulties to run their family. The government had assured that they would take necessary action to curb the price rise but they have failed miserably. The Food and Civil Supplies department of Assam has failed completely to check the price rise,” Gogoi added.
