Guwahati, Aug 24: An accused involved in molestation of a woman in Assam’s Tezpur was injured in police firing when he tried to flee from police custody after snatching the revolver of a constable.
The incident took place in Gotlung in Dolabari area of Tezpur.
According to reports, the accused youth was admitted at a hospital for treatment. He is out of danger.
The accused youth has been identified as Miraj Ali, who sustained bullet injury on his right leg.
“On Friday evening, two youths allegedly molested a woman who was on her way during evening hours. The woman ran away and informed the shopkeeper about the incident. They chased away the youths and among them one youth identified as Shah Rukh Hussain was held by the public but the other managed to flee,” said an police official.
He further said, “But after sometime, Miraj was nabbed by the public and when he was handed over to police, he tried to snatch the service revolver of another police and tried to flee from the spot. The police team intervened and fired a shot on his leg, injuring him.”
Another suspect is still absconding. Police have launched a massive manhunt to nab the culprit.
Meanwhile, the public of Tezpur gheraoed Mahaabhairab police station for several hours in protest against the alleged molestation of the woman. To disperse the protesters, police had to use mild force.
“We want safety and security of women. There is no security and safety of women in Assam because everyday incidents of molestation are happening in the state,” said a protester.
