Guwahati, June 27: The Amrit Sarovar initiative, launched by the central government in 2022, is showing promising results for both water conservation and wildlife protection in the notified forest areas of the state.
These artificial ponds, created across all districts of Assam, are providing much-needed water sources for wild animals, especially during hot summer months.
In a heartwarming scene captured by the Goalpara district forest department, wild elephants were spotted cooling off in one of these Amrit Sarovars located inside the Khumarkhali reserve forest under Lakhipur forest range in the district, which shares an inter-state border with Meghalaya.
The department shared the photo on social media, highlighting the dual benefits of water conservation and wildlife protection. The post on X said, “Wild elephants in Goalpara cool off at Amrit Sarovars, a government’s initiative for water conservation! #WildlifeConservation #WaterConservation”
It is worth mentioning that 75 water bodies in each district nationwide were constructed under the Amrit Sarovar scheme which was launched as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahostav in 2023. Assam has adopted its own model for implementing the scheme, involving forest dwellers and the forest department in the management of these ponds.
Forest department officials note that these ponds are not only helping large animals like elephants but also contributing to overall biodiversity by creating habitats for various plant and animal species. We wait for more such positive outcomes of the centrally assisted scheme.
