Guwahati, Dec 13: More than 300 former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) workers joined the BJP in a function at Guwahati on Wednesday.
Among them, Debyajyoti Medhi, former AASU leader and ex-MP from Congress Kirip Chaliha’s son, also joined the BJP.
Sources said the decision was taken by former AASU leaders and workers after the recent AASU session.
The AASU delegation led by former AASU leader Dibyajyoti Medhi met Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and expressed their support for the BJP earlier.
Talking to media persons, state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita said that the Modi government has given respect to the youth, for which the youth have faith in the Modi government.
He said that the Congress has betrayed the people of Assam and has engaged in enormous corruption in the past, for which the people of Assam will never trust Congress in the future.
“Around 300 AASU workers joined the BJP because they saw the future in our party. I welcome all of them to our party,” state cabinet minister Pijush Hazarika said.
Dibyajyoti Medhi said, “We and the younger generation are attracted to the BJP’s journey of development. That’s why I have come forward to work with the BJP.”
