Guwahati, May 31: Barak Valley has been badly affected due to the recent flash floods and around 1.50 lakh people have been affected and taking shelter in the relief camps.

Assam’s Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika visited Cachar and Karimganj and assessed the flood situation and guaranteed that all essential assistance would be provided.

In Karimganj district, nearly 38,000 people including 10,000 children in 100 villages were affected in the deluged.

On the other hand, in Cachar district more than 1 lakh people were affected due to the flood.

Speaking to reporters, Pijush Hazarika said, “Many embankments were breached due to the rising level of most of the rivers. The people who were affected in the flood will get relief. According to the government’s relief manual, those affected in the flood will definitely get relief and District administration will take care of the relief,”.

“I’ve visited most of the areas. In the last four days, Karimganj received 50 highest mm rainfall. In a year Karimganj received 50 mm rainfall but in the last four days, it break all records. Five embankments were breached in the Barak valley due to the flood. We will take all precautionary measures to repair the damages,” Hazarika said.

Patharkandi MLA Krishenendu Paul said, “Due to the continuous rainfall in Mizoram the Longai River was submerged and the whole of Patharkandi was affected. Five dykes were breached and around 50-60 thousand people were affected in the constituency. Helipad relief camp has been open and the government has been taking all possible measures,”.

Karimganj District Commissioner Mridul Yadav instructed the fishermen and people living in the vicinity of the Singla river to not go near the river.

Life came to a standstill in the three districts of Assam’s Barak Valley and Dima Hasao, while intermittent rainfall and thunderstorms were reported from the other affected districts on Thursday.

Barak Valley’s Karimganj, Cachar, and Hailakandi districts, the Barak River and its tributaries Longai, Kushiara, Singla, and Katakhal were flowing above the danger level at several locations, showing a rising trend, while four embankments were damaged in Karimganj.
