Dibrugarh, Jan 9: BJP today emphasized to its workers that panchayat elections are grassroots elections and hold immense importance for strengthening rural governance and development.
Party workers and representatives from three Lok Sabha constituencies—Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Lakhimpur—participated in the meeting in Dibrugarh which was chaired by BJP state president Bhabesh Kalita.
“These are grassroots elections and hold significant importance for the party,” BJP state president Bhabesh Kalita emphasized while outlining the BJP’s focus on development as the core agenda for the Gaon Panchayat polls.
State BJP spokesperson Subhash Dutta highlighted the significance of the meeting, stating, “District presidents from eight districts of Upper Assam participated to discuss poll strategies. The elections are vital as they form the backbone of governance at the village level. Strengthening the Gaon Panchayats is a priority for us.”
Key leaders, including Assam Pradesh BJP Prabhari Harish Dwivedi, Lakhimpur Lok Sabha MP Pradhan Baruah, state education minister Ranoj Pegu, power minister Prasanta Phukan, and various MLAs, were present at the meeting.
The upcoming elections will select representatives for 397 Zilla Parishad constituencies, 181 Anchalik Panchayats, 2,193 Gaon Panchayats, and 21,930 wards across 27 districts, excluding Sixth Schedule and municipal areas.
The Assam State Election Commission has published draft electoral rolls, reflecting the 2024 delimitation of constituencies. The rolls enumerate 17,554,589 voters, including 8,829,927 male voters, 8,724,274 female voters, and 388 others across 23,781 polling stations.
With the elections serving as a critical measure of grassroots governance, the BJP aims to consolidate its influence in rural Assam through strategic preparation and development-focused initiatives.
