Guwahati, Dec 5: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to expand and reshuffle his cabinet on December 7, ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The reshuffle will see the inclusion of four new ministers while one incumbent minister will be dropped, marking a strategic shift in the BJP’s approach to governance in the state.
The new entrants to the cabinet are senior BJP leaders Prasanta Phukan, Krishnendu Paul, Kaushik Rai, and Rupesh Goala.
Prasanta Phukan, a seasoned legislator representing Dibrugarh since 2006, is a prominent figure in Assam’s political landscape.
Krishnendu Paul, the MLA from Patharkandi since 2016, is known for his strong grassroots leadership.
Kaushik Rai, representing Lakhipur, has gained recognition for his consistent work in his constituency.
Rupesh Goala, a fresh face in the cabinet, was elected from the Doomdooma constituency in 2021 and brings new energy to the leadership team.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Kishan, the Minister of Tea Tribe Welfare, has tendered his resignation. His removal marks one of the significant changes in this reshuffle, potentially signaling a new direction for the welfare of tea garden communities.
The reshuffle decision was finalized after consultations between Chief Minister Sarma, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP national president J.P. Nadda. Sarma traveled to Maharashtra to discuss the details with the party’s top brass.
The reshuffle reflects the BJP’s strategy to balance regional and community dynamics, strengthen its political base, and position itself strongly for the 2026 elections.
