Guwahati, Oct 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today suggested that a coordinated effort with the West Bengal government could further strengthen the process of detecting illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
He announced on Sunday that more than 138 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh were detected in Assam and Tripura over the past two months.
“Every day for the past two months, we have been apprehending either individual foreigners or groups entering our state. Due to the porous India-Bangladesh border, despite the best efforts of the BSF, some individuals continue to cross into our country. The state government must play a proactive role in addressing this issue.”
He added that Assam and Tripura are working closely together to detect illegal immigrants and suggested that a coordinated effort with the West Bengal government could further strengthen the process.
“In the last two months, we have identified and repatriated 138 infiltrators. Contrary to the assumption that Hindus might enter India due to instability in Bangladesh, we are primarily seeing Rohingya Muslims crossing over,” Sarma explained, challenging common perceptions about immigration trends.
The chief minister also noted that while both Assam and Tripura are actively identifying illegal immigrants, some individuals still manage to enter other states. “We are coordinating with the BSF, and identification efforts often involve joint operations between the BSF and state police,” he said.
Sarma emphasized the need for vigilance across states, particularly with the BSF’s support, noting, “Every state government must remain vigilant. Assam and Tripura are working together, and if West Bengal joins, we can establish a more systematic, well-orchestrated approach.”
