Assam CM hopeful of onboarding Paresh Baruah for talks after historic peace accord with ULFA

Guwahati, Dec 30: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday informed that the peace accords with ULFA incorporates the main principles of delimitation exercise of assemblies and parliamentary constituencies done this year will also remain in future and a voter before changing his constituencies has to fulfil several conditions.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Sarma said, “The strongest act was delimitation exercises for saving the political future of Assamese people. In this accord it is there that principle which guided the delimitation exercise this year will remain intact in the future exercise too. Like 95 to 100 assembly constituencies which are protected for Assamese people will remain so in future.”

“The accord has offered an investment of Rs. 1.5 Lakh crore. Institutes like IIM, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, and Architectural University will be set up. New railway tracks and new highways have formed part of the accord. There will be restrictions on purchase of land in and around iconic structures,” Sarma asserted.

He was also hopeful that this peace accord will stimulate the anti-talk ULFA faction led by Paresh Baruah to come for talks.

“There will be rehabilitation of the ULFA cadres. Over 10,000 people and security forces were killed during the ULFA movement. ULFA will be disbanded, camps will be disbanded and weapons deposited, 726 cadres will be rehabilitated. Nine families of those ULFA cadres who were missing or died in Bhutan will be rehabilitated with government jobs,” he informed.

Sarma further added that six communities which are demanding the Scheduled Tribe status have received the Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s audience. The home minister has hinted that he will talk to them and in Assam this is the next issue with which he will deal. Adivasi, Chutia, Koch-Rajbongshi, Matak, Moran, and Tai-Ahom are demanding ST status.

The political landscape of Assam stands changed after almost 27 years as the Election commission of India has published the Delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies.
