Guwahati, Jan 24: Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Tuesday the registration of an FIR against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Kanhaiya Kumar, and others. The charges include alleged involvement in violence, provocation, damage to public property, and assault on police personnel.
This development follows clashes between Congress workers and the police after the denial of permission for Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra to enter Guwahati through its main routes.
The case was filed hours after the chief minister directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to register a case against Gandhi for “provoking the crowd” to break barricades and called their actions “Naxalite tactics.” “I have instructed @DGPAssamPolice to register a case against your leader, @RahulGandhi, for provoking the crowd,” the chief minister said in a tweet, which was in response to a post by Youth Congress president Srinivas BV.
“With reference to wanton acts of violence, provocation, damage to public property, and assault on police personnel today by Cong members, a FIR has been registered against Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Kanhaiya Kumar, and other individuals under Section 120(B) of the IPC R/W Sec. 3 of the PDPP Act.” Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma posted at X.
