Assam CM kicks off panchayat poll campaign with welfare promises, attacks Congress

Must read

Boko, April 30: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday sounded the poll bugle for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at a massive Vijay Sankalp rally in Rongjuli Sarapara field, under the Dudhnoi Assembly Constituency of Goalpara district. The rally, organised as part of the party’s campaign for the upcoming Panchayat elections, drew thousands of supporters and saw the announcement of several key welfare measures.

Addressing the crowd, Sarma declared that from October 1, all ration card holders in Assam would receive pulses, cooking oil, and salt at subsidised rates. He also announced that domestic LPG cylinders would be made available at ₹650, with beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme receiving them at a heavily subsidised rate of ₹250.

Highlighting his government’s achievements, Sarma said that 1.5 lakh youth had secured government jobs in the last four-and-a-half years. He also introduced new financial incentives for students—₹300 for those who pass the matriculation exam, and ₹2,500 per month for degree holders until they gain employment.

The Chief Minister launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting genuine development and engaging in token giveaways. He urged Assam’s minority communities to observe the absence of communal violence under BJP rule, contrasting it with what he described as Congress’s history of unrest.

Sarma also targeted Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, demanding a public clarification on alleged comments about visiting Pakistan. Appealing to Gogoi to honour the legacy of his grandfather, the late former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Sarma added that criticism from opposition leaders like Akhil Gogoi would only strengthen the BJP’s support base.

The event was attended by several senior leaders, including Tankeswar Rabha, Chief Executive Member of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, Guwahati MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi, and BJP State Secretary Tinamoni Daimari.

Significantly, the rally marked the formal launch of the BJP’s campaign for the second phase of Panchayat polls in Goalpara, scheduled for May 7. Sarma claimed the party’s growing influence in the region, noting that BJP candidates in two Zila Parishad constituencies—11. Dwarka and 10 No. Agia-Badahapara had already won unopposed.
