Guwahati, Aug 25: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that crime against women in Dhing where a 14-year-old minor girl was raped is linked to a design on land encroachment.
Talking to reporters, CM Sarma said, “In 12 to 14 districts in Assam, we are in minority. The trend is simple, they initiated this kind of activity so that our people will leave and come out from that place. This is not only crime against women, there is a larger design; this is linked to land encroachment. Once the activities are done people become insecure and leave the area.”
Without taking any names, he remarked that a particular community has been using a pattern whereby they first commit a crime, instil a sense of fear among Assamese people who then sell their land and leave; and this has been going on for the last 15 years.
“In Dhing, there is tremendous pressure on Assamese people to leave the area. It is the birth place of famous Assamese saint Srimanta Sankardev but now see the demographic pattern there. Once the entire area had 90 percent of Assamese living there, but today Assamese people have been reduced to ten percent because of continuous criminal activities. Assamese people are leaving, whereas other section of people is occupying the vacated land,” Sarma claimed.
He further said that criminal incidents have increased in Dhing in last few years, which he claimed are used as weapon to get land vacated. “The timing is after the Lok Sabha election. This can be inferred with the resurgence a particular political party which has support base among that section who are involved in these crimes,” he said.
He emphasized that the people of Assam are faced with a challenge, which is to identify who is their friend and who is their enemy. “This is happening for decades in Assam this is why Assam Agitation happened in the 80s. In Assam, crime against women had come down. But the real intention of committing these crimes against women by these people is much bigger,” Sarma added.
