Guwahati, Apr 9: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that only one individual from the Barak Valley has applied for the Citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Talking to media persons, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The whole CAA agitation was baseless, and it has been proved. There is nothing called CAA, no one has applied for it from the state. As of date, only one person from the Barak Valley has applied for the citizenship application under CAA,”.
“The entire CAA protest was based on misconception and now the protesters have to answer. Some people are doing politics with the emotion of the people,” Sarma added.
The Centre had last month implemented the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, notifying the rules four years after the law was passed by Parliament to fast-track citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014.
Assam witnessed violent protests in 2019, resulting in casualties. Indigenous groups expressed concern that CAA could lead to an influx of immigrants, altering the demographic landscape of the region.
