Guwahati, Nov 24: Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) landmark victory in the Samaguri by-election, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has set his sights on winning five more minority-dominated constituencies in the 2026 assembly elections.
Speaking to the media, Sarma emphasized the party’s focus on minority areas while adhering to the principle of “justice for all, appeasement to none,” reflecting the philosophy of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’. “We will continue to seek votes in minority areas, but with a clear notion—we are not here to appease but to ensure justice,” he said.
Sarma highlighted the BJP’s unprecedented success in Karimganj during the Lok Sabha elections, a constituency with a 65% minority population, and noted the significance of the Samaguri win. “No one expected BJP to win Karimganj MP seat. Similarly, in Samaguri, we unseated a Congress stronghold. In the next assembly elections, we aim to replicate this success in at least five more constituencies. Our strategy is already in place,” he added.
He described the by-election results as a major boost ahead of the 2026 assembly polls. The BJP, along with allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), secured a total of five seats in the recent by-elections.
The Samaguri victory was particularly notable as BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarma defeated Congress candidate Tanzil Hussain by a margin of 24,423 votes. This marked the end of Congress’s two-decade dominance in the constituency, previously led by veteran leader Rakibul Hussain.
The victory underscores the BJP’s growing influence in areas traditionally held by its political rivals, setting the stage for a fierce contest in 2026.
