Guwahati, Sept 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has written to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, urging his intervention to resume the stalled construction work on the Majuli-Jorhat bridge. The construction has been on hold since September 5, this year, raising concerns about the project’s timely completion.
In his letter, CM Sarma expressed serious concerns over the lack of accountability from the contractor, UP State Bridge Corporation Limited, warning that further delays could jeopardize the entire project. He emphasized the strategic importance of the two-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra River, which will significantly improve connectivity between Majuli and Jorhat.
The project, approved in 2021 under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode, is expected to be completed by December 2025 at an estimated cost of Rs. 650 crores. Sarma also highlighted the importance of the current dry season for construction, stating that any additional delays could lead to significant time and cost overruns.
“I have urged Minister Gadkari to take immediate corrective measures, including the possibility of re-tendering the project, if necessary, to ensure work resumes at the earliest and the project is completed within the stipulated timeline,” CM Sarma said in his letter.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated: ” HCM Dr @himantabiswa has written a letter to Hon’ble Union Minister Shri @nitin_gadkari, seeking his intervention to resume work at the construction site of the Majuli-Jorhat bridge which has been stalled since September 5. HCM has highlighted the lack of accountability on part of the EPC contractor, which can jeopardize the entire project. HCM urged Hon’ble Minister for his support in getting the project started again to meet its original deadline of December 2025.”
