Guwahati, Dec 17: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has written a letter to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urging him to establish Khumtai as sub-district headquarter.

“Khumtai holds immense potential to benefit the local community and contribute significantly to the overall development of the region, with a sense of utmost pride. I request CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to declare Khumtai as sub-district headquarter,” Gaurav Gogoi stated in his letter.

The letter further stated, “I firmly believe that establishing the Khumtai Sub-District headquarters in Khumtai will contribute substantially to the overall development of this region. The strategic advantages, existing infrastructure, and historical significance make Khumtai an ideal and prudent choice for this administrative expansion. I am optimistic that your support will bring positive changes and development to Khumtai and its surrounding areas.”

He, however, pointed out that, after thorough discussions with local residents and various civic organizations, there are certain elements opposing the establishment of the Khumtai Sub-District Headquarters in Khumtai.

He also listed out several reasons that make Khumtai stand out.

Smooth Connectivity via Road & Railways:
Khumtai offers seamless connectivity with Golaghat Sadar through Dhudhar Ali, Kargil Martyred Captain Jintu Gogoi Path with NH37, and the ongoing construction of a bridge over the Dhanshiri River connecting Morongi and Numaligarh Refinery.

The Numaligarh Railway Station is also located in Hautoli GP of Khumtai. This enhanced connectivity would facilitate efficient transportation and communication, fostering economic development in the region.

Existing Infrastructure:
Khumtai already had basic necessary infrastructure with essential offices like the Circle Office, Mouzadar Office, Police Station, Krishi Bigyan Kendra, Khumtai Model Hospital, School, College & IB. Establishing the Sub-District Headquarters here would build upon this existing foundation.

Naming Legacy:
The presence of the legislative assembly named after Khumtai is a testament to the historical and cultural significance of the region. Establishing the Sub-District Headquarters here would further enhance the identity and importance of Khumtai.

Bharat Gaurav and Bir Chakra Captain Jintu Gogoi’s Legacy:
Khumtai proudly holds the legacy of Bharat Gaurav, Bir Chakra Captain Jintu Gogoi. His smarak in the region adds to the historical and patriotic significance of Khumtai, making it a fitting location for administrative expansion.

Availability of Sufficient Land:
Most importantly, the presence of ample land near the Circle Office at Leteku Chapori provides a practical and feasible location for establishing the Sub-District Headquarters. Additionally, the expansion work of Numaligarh Refinery Ltd. at Hatidubi, in close proximity to Khumtai, is progressing smoothly.
