Assam: Cong seeks disqualification of their two MLAs for ‘violating party whip’ during RS polls

Guwahati, April 8: Assam Speaker will issue show-cause notices to two suspended Congress MLAs following a petition from the party’s leader in the House seeking their disqualification from the Assembly for allegedly violating the party whip during the Rajya Sabha (RS) elections last month.

Congress has alleged that Karimganj South MLA Siddique Ahmed manipulated cancellation of his vote, while Raha MLA Shashi Kanta Das is suspected to have voted for BJP as he has been vocal in support of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP government.

Despite having enough numbers to win one of the two seats, Congress faced defeat at the hands of the NDA by seven votes.

Assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary on Thursday said, “This is a legal matter. The leader of opposition (Congress leader Debabrata Saikia) has petitioned for their disqualification for allegedly violating the party whip in Rajya Sabha polls… The two MLAs should also get a chance to submit their viewpoints, and so the process is on to issue show-cause notices to the two MLAs.”

He added, “After examining the submissions of both the sides, we will take a decision after few days.”
