Guwahati, May 2: Congress MP and Jorhat representative Gaurav Gogoi faced public outrage during a Panchayat election campaign in Nalbari, where angry protestors waved black flags and shouted slogans accusing him of having links with Pakistan.
The protest erupted while Gogoi was campaigning for the second phase of the Assam Panchayat elections. The crowd, visibly agitated, shouted “Go back, Gaurav Gogoi” and branded him a “supporter of Pakistan,” forcing the Congress leader to cut short his visit and leave the scene abruptly.
“For 15 days, he stayed in Pakistan without informing the High Commission. Why the secrecy?” questioned one protester, referring to allegations recently levelled by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Sarma has intensified attacks on the Congress leader, alleging that Gogoi’s children are no longer Indian citizens and questioning the nature of his supposed trip to Pakistan. “There are no tourist spots in Pakistan—only terrorist hideouts,” Sarma claimed during a media briefing on Friday. “We are examining what he did for 15 days there. It is 100 per cent confirmed he went, but the question is why?”
The Chief Minister also hinted at financial links between Gogoi’s wife and a Pakistan-based NGO, raising further controversy and political tension. On April 28, Sarma had stated he possessed “clear evidence” of Gogoi’s travel to Pakistan and Nepal, promising to release more details before September.
While Gaurav Gogoi has yet to respond publicly to these allegations, the heated exchange has added a dramatic twist to the Panchayat poll atmosphere in Assam, setting the stage for a politically charged battle.
