Guwahati, June 29: The Assam Congress has put up a strong opposition against the reappointment of retired Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer MK Yadava as Special Chief Secretary, citing multiple alleged violations of administrative rules.
The leader of opposition in Assam State Assembly and prominent Congress leader, Debabrata Saikia, said, “In the recent time, for creating commando camps in the wildlife, the National Green Tribunal and the Forest Ministry has given him show cause. Even after this, the person who was the Managing Director of Amtron (Assam Electronics Development Corporation), I don’t know what his capabilities are but why the forest department has proposed him for the post of special chief secretary. His illegal works have been proved by Assam forest service rules or act. According to the rules, it has been clearly mentioned how a person can be promoted and it has been already compromised.”
Recently, the National Green Tribunal has also issued a suo moto case against M.K Yadava for alleged illegal diversion of Forest lands for non-forest purposes in violation of the Forest Conservation Act 1980 and the recently implemented Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam 2023.
The suo moto case which was taken up by the National Green Tribunal against Yadava was for alleged illegal clearance and diversion of substantial tracks of forest land to facilitate the construction of commando battalions and other non-forestry activities like making public roads.
The NGT’s directives include an unequivocal order to halt all ongoing construction activities on the diverted forest lands and an exhaustive inquiry into the illegal land diversion and the roles of all involved.
