Guwahati, Dec 30: The Assam Congress has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing deep dismay over what it termed a “disregard for the legacy” of late Dr Manmohan Singh by the Assam Government during the state mourning period following his demise.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, highlighted the alleged failure of the Assam Government to uphold its own declaration of a seven-day state mourning from December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025. The letter criticized the state government for organizing public events and launching schemes on the day of Dr Singh’s funeral, which was attended by the Prime Minister in New Delhi.
“Such scheme-launched events could have been avoided, at least on the day of the funeral of Late Dr. Manmohan Singh,” the letter stated.
The letter further emphasized Dr Singh’s long-standing connection to Assam, noting that he served as a Rajya Sabha MP from the state for over 28 years. “Late Dr. Manmohan Singh was not just a former Prime Minister but also a revered representative of Assam in the Rajya Sabha,” it added.
Saikia also pointed out that other states, including Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, had cancelled their scheduled programs as a mark of respect, whereas the Assam Government continued its activities “as if it was business as usual.”
Describing the actions as “deplorable,” the Congress leader said they had “severely hurt the memories of Dr Manmohan Singh among the public in Assam.”
The letter called on the Prime Minister to intervene and ensure that Assam appropriately honours the legacy of Dr Singh, whose contributions to the nation and the state were unparalleled.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 24, 2024, was known for his economic reforms and two terms as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. A distinguished parliamentarian, he represented Assam with dedication and integrity for nearly three decades in the Rajya Sabha.
The Assam Congress has expressed hope that the Prime Minister will address the issue and take steps to preserve the dignity and memory of the late leader.
