Must read

Guwahati, March 4: In a landmark decision, the Assam Cabinet has announced that the new Electronics City coming up in Jagiroad, Assam, will be named after Tata Group’s Chairman Emeritus, the late Ratan Tata. The move recognizes his immense contributions to Assam, particularly through the Tata Group’s decision to establish India’s first semiconductor plant in the state.

Announcing the decision, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the new electronics city, which will be Northeast India’s first, will be named ‘Ratan Tata Electronics City’ as a tribute to his visionary leadership and pioneering role in transforming Assam’s industrial landscape. He emphasized that the Tata Group’s commitment to setting up the semiconductor plant in the state has been a game changer, attracting significant industrial interest and investment to the region.

Ratan Tata was also the first recipient of Assam’s highest civilian honor, the Assam Vaibhav award, in recognition of his contributions to the state’s development.

Earlier, the Assam government unveiled plans for the Electronics City in Jagiroad, which will focus on semiconductors and advanced electronics, positioning the state as a high-tech manufacturing hub. The semiconductor plant’s Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) unit is expected to drive innovation and industrial growth in the region.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran highlighted at the Assam Advantage 2.0 that this move would position Assam at the heart of the global semiconductor ecosystem.

Tata Group’s future investments include the installation of 5GW renewable energy capacity in Assam over the next five years and the establishment of a large manufacturing technology facility that will create 30,000 job opportunities.

Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Advantage Assam 2.0 to further its commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development in the state.

It will support upto 5000 MW of renewable and clean energy projects comprising Solar, Wind, Hydro and Energy Storage in the state with INR 30000 crores investment over the next 5 years.

As part of this collaboration, the Assam Government will facilitate the identification and allocation of approximately 20000 acres of encumbrance-free government land on a lease basis and assist in acquiring private land suitable for solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage projects. Additionally, the state will support infrastructure development to ensure seamless transmission connectivity and promote the establishment of Renewable Energy Parks through state agencies.

The initiative will also include the identification of land for Group Captive sites, enabling industries and tea gardens to access clean energy under Assam’s land allotment and Industrial policies. To accelerate project execution, the Government has committed to single-window clearances for statutory approvals, financial incentives, and collaboration with research institutions for innovation in the renewable sector.
