Guwahati, Feb 4: With the Assam assembly’s budget session scheduled to begin on February 5th, all attention is focused on the possibility of the state government presenting a bill to prohibit polygamy.
There have been reports that the bill draft has been scrutinised by the law department of the state for quite some time now.
Reports also say that Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has already made a panel to examine the future of the polygamy ban in the state.
The budget session of the Assam assembly will begin on February 5 and conclude on February 28, with the budget for the next fiscal year to be tabled on February 12.
Seeing the complex demography of Assam, the bill to ban polygamy is likely to attract mixed reactions from different corners of the state.
The state government’s plans to ban polygamy have earlier been slammed as communal by the opposition parties, especially at a time when suggestions on the Universal Civil Code are being received by the Law Commission of the country.
Things will be more clear after the special four-day session of the Uttarakhand assembly that starts on February 5, where the state’s UCC Bill is likely to be laid on that very day itself. It’s sure and certain that the Assam State government will definitely keep an eye on it.
