Guwahati, May 13: A farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Tuesday morning, highlighting the growing human-elephant conflict in the region.
The deceased has been identified as Krishna Kheria, a resident of Poglabill village in Rangapara. According to eyewitness accounts, he was working in his field when a wild elephant suddenly emerged from the Poglabill-Barjuli connecting road and charged at him.
A woman who was also nearby narrowly escaped the attack.

A team from Rangapara Police Station visited the site and conducted a preliminary investigation.
The incident has once again raised alarm among local residents and farmers, who say the threat from elephants is becoming more frequent and dangerous.
“We urge the forest department to take immediate steps to drive the elephants back into the forest. They are creating havoc in our village. The department has failed to control the elephant herd,” said a local villager.

Experts say that human-elephant conflict in Assam is intensifying due to deforestation and habitat loss. In search of food, elephants are increasingly straying into human settlements and farmland.
Assam is home to about one-fifth of India’s elephant population. The conflict over natural resources has become complex and widespread, exacerbated by population pressure and unplanned development that has led to habitat fragmentation across the Brahmaputra and Barak River valley and the Barail Hill range in between.
