Guwahati, Aug 28: Assam Government has started taking action against USTM Chancellor, Mahbubul Hoque, after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently vowed to go after the educationist for alleged ‘flood jihad’.
District Commissioner of Karimganj, Mridul Yadav, has stated that an First Information Report (FIR) will be lodged against the Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology of Meghalaya (USTM), Mahbubul Hoque, for allegedly using a fraudulent OBC certificate.
According to Mridul Yadav, the certificate was issued to Hoque on August 24, 1992, and cancelled on August 20, 1996.
In a letter to the Assam government, the DC stated, “On close examination of the caste issue register, it is found that the OBC certificate of the above-mentioned person was cancelled on 20.08.1996. (copy of the issue register is enclosed herewith for your kind perusal) The copy of the cancellation order/certificate cannot be traced out as yet.”
Yadav added, “This is for favour of your kind information and necessary action.”
This comes after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a case will be filed against Hoque for allegedly obtaining an OBC (Other Backward Class) certificate fraudulently from the state’s Karimganj district 32 years ago.
Talking to reporters, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said, “Procuring a caste certificate through fraudulent means is a crime. I have directed the District Commissioner of Karimganj, Mridul Yadav, to initiate legal action against Mahbubul Hoque.”
“We presumed the USTM Chancellor to be an educator. However, a report from the Karimganj DC has uncovered that he fraudulently obtained an OBC certificate, which was later revoked by the then DC. Can someone who holds a fake OBC certificate truly be regarded as an educator?” Sarma questioned.
