Guwahati, July 3: The Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a flood advisory for four lower Assam districts in view of the rising water levels of the river Brahmaputra, which flows across these districts. The districts are Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Goalpara and Dhubri.
According to the flood advisory, the River Brahmaputra is flowing in a “severe situation” across multiple locations. At Guwahati (D.C. Court) in Kamrup district, the river was recorded at 50.72 m as of midnight, rising at 20.0 mm/hr. This level is 1.04 m above its Danger Level of 49.68 m and approaching its previous Highest Flood Level (HFL) of 51.46 m, recorded on July 21, 2004.
In Goalpara district, the situation is equally critical. The river level at Goalpara stood at 36.6 m at midnight, with a rising trend of 30.0 mm/hr. This is 0.33 m above its Danger Level of 36.27 m, though still 0.83 m below its previous HFL of 37.43 m from July 31, 1954.
The scenario in Dhubri district is also alarming. At midnight, the Brahmaputra at Dhubri was flowing at 29.57 m, rising at 30.0 mm/hr. This level exceeds its Danger Level of 28.62 m by 0.95 m and is approaching its previous HFL of 30.37 m, recorded on July 17, 2019.
After wreaking havoc in upper and middle Assam districts, the Brahmaputra and its tributaries pose severe flooding threats in the four lower Assam districts.
