Guwahati, June 22: Over 1.2 lakh people in as many as 10 districts of Assam have been affected by the recent wave of flood.

Overnight rains across Assam, inundated new areas resulting in rise in number of affected people.

The Assam districts affected by the floods are: Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sonitpur and Udalguri.

According to ASDMA, Nalbari district is the worst affected with almost 45,000 people reeling under water.

“Around 780 villages are under flood waters. A total of 10,591.85 hectares of crop areas have also been damaged across Assam due to floods,” an official of ASDMA said.

On the other hand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued “yellow alert” for the state of Assam during Thursday (June 22) and Friday (June 23).

The IMD predicted “very heavy” to “extremely heavy” rainfall across Assam during coming days.

Assam is hit by several rounds of floods every year. The lowlands and riverine areas bear the brunt of the deluge. The flooding pattern is usually repeated year-to-year.

The monsoon hit Assam on June 10; the weather department recorded an average rainfall of 41 mm in 24 hours on June 17.

The IMD predicted moderate rainfall over five days after that, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places.

“Every year we have to faced worst situation during floods. We have to shift to relief camps when flood waters enters our village. Our crops were damaged every year due to the flooding. We are helpless against the nature,” said a resident of Morigaon.
