Assam floods: Over 1 lakh people affected across 17 districts; 2 people washed away in the river

Guwahati, August 29: The flood situation has been grim in Assam after 17 districts were affected after Brahmaputra river rises due to the incessant rain in upper streams areas for the last couple of days.

According to reports, surging flood waters claimed two more lives in Sivasagar and Dibrugarh districts and affected a total of 1,90,675 people across 17 districts of the state over the past 24 hours.

The districts affected by floods are Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri.

The daily flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Monday evening said six more districts were affected by the flood in the past 24 hours, affecting more than 1.45 lakh people.

Altogether,  1,90,675 people remained affected in 522 villages on Monday. The ASDMA bulletin said 47 relief camps have been opened in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Chirang, and Sonitpur districts. Crop areas of over 8,086 hectares have also been damaged due to flood so far.

The flood is an annual disaster in Assam, and 14 people died in the first wave this year in June and July. The death of one person in Sivasagar brought the total number of deaths due to floods this year to 15.

Several roads, bridges and other infrastructures have been damaged and embankments breached in Biswanath, Darrang, Udalguri, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Tamulpur and Udalguri districts.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and respective district administrations in the flood-affected districts have been engaged in relief and rescue operations.
