Jorhat, June 15: Eqbal Ahmed, the Forest Ranger Officer of Jorhat Forest Range, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe in his office on Saturday.
As per reports, a team of the Anti-Corruption and Vigilance Department of Assam arrested him while he was accepting a bribe of Rs. 30,000 as a second installment for issuing a license to a person against a timber shop.
The range officer demanded Rs 4 lakh to issue the license and had already received Rs. 3 lakh in the first installment from the victim.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the arrest in his X post. He wrote, “Today, on 15.06.2024, the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption team conducted a successful operation in Jorhat. Forest Range Officer Eqbal Ahmed was caught red-handed in his office accepting a Rs. 30,000/- bribe for issuing a license.”
Meanwhile, vigilance officials are interrogating him at his office.
