Tinsukia, Aug 11: Four persons, including a father and son, died in an illicit liquor den at Tipuk under Doomdooma Police Station in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia on Thursday.

The deceased have been identified as Ram Prasad Rai (70), his son Patarji Rai (40), and two labourers named Jagdish Gowala, alias Koya (40), and Pukla Kishan (38).

According to reports, lali gur (molasses) is kept in huge tanks to be disposed of in order to prepare Chulai. During the rainy days, those tanks are cleaned.

The people went into a tank to clean it, as it was raining in the morning hours.

Unfortunately, when they were cleaning the tank, the rain stopped and the weather became very hot and humid as the sun shone.

Under such conditions, it is suspected that they died in the tank due to breathing problem.

Later, all four were brought to Doomdooma FRU Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Police have started an investigation into the incident.

It may be mentioned here that Ram Prasad Rai, who is popular here as Chulai Mafia, has been doing this illicit liquor business for several decades.

Though the Excise Department is well aware of it, no stern action is taken against it for some unknown reasons, except for a few occasional raids.

Moreover, he was also in the good books of a section of leaders of political parties and various other organisations, as he used to satisfy them with money. The incident has caused a sensation in the entire Doomdooma circle.
